Video: Copyright Criminals by PBS

This is a very interesting PBS segment on the modern art of “sampling” and the division that it’s created in the music industry. There are convincing arguments for and against using the recorded works of others, however none of them sway me to either side of the fence. In regards to the argument that sampling is “lazy”, it just depends on the artist. I will agree that most sample based producers choose to sample because they are too lazy to learn an instrument, but at the same time there are some master instrumentalists that choose to sample for timber and creativity. I choose to create from scratch because it’s what inspires me. If others choose to sample for the same reason, I can’t hate on that! Very sweet little video.
